What Is Permanent Jewelry? Everything You Need to Know
Permanent Jewelry Greenville SC
f you’ve seen someone wearing a delicate bracelet with no clasp and wondered, “How do they take that off?” — you’ve probably spotted permanent jewelry.
Permanent jewelry has become a popular way to celebrate friendships, relationships, milestones, birthdays, family connections, or simply treat yourself to a piece of jewelry designed to stay with you.
At The Greenville Spark, Greenville, South Carolina’s original permanent jewelry business, we’ve been sparking memories since 2022. But if permanent jewelry is completely new to you, here’s everything you need to know before getting your first piece.
What Is Permanent Jewelry?
Permanent jewelry is jewelry that is custom-fitted and welded closed instead of using a traditional clasp.
You choose your chain, we measure it specifically to you, and then the ends are connected with a tiny jump ring. A specialized permanent jewelry welder delivers a quick pulse that closes the ring.
And just like that — you’re sparked!
Despite the name, permanent jewelry isn’t literally permanent. It can be removed whenever you need or want to take it off.
Does Getting Permanent Jewelry Hurt?
No!
The welding process never touches your skin. The spark is used only on the tiny metal connection point, and a protective barrier is placed between your skin and the jewelry during the process.
There are no needles, no piercing and no pain involved.
Getting permanent jewelry is usually quick, easy and, in our opinion, one of the most fun ways to shop for jewelry.
What Types of Permanent Jewelry Can You Get?
Permanent jewelry isn’t limited to bracelets.
At The Greenville Spark in Greenville, SC, you can create:
Permanent bracelets
Permanent anklets
Permanent necklaces
Permanent rings
Permanent bangles
Hand chains
Custom stacks
You can keep your piece simple with a classic chain or personalize it with connectors, charms, birthstones, gemstones and other details.
We offer a large selection of chains and connectors so your piece can feel like your jewelry rather than something everyone else is wearing.
What Metals Are Used for Permanent Jewelry?
The quality of the metal matters, especially for jewelry you plan to wear every day.
At The Greenville Spark, we offer permanent jewelry in 14k solid gold, gold filled, sterling silver and rose gold filled, along with specialty and seasonal chain options.
We do not use gold-plated chain for permanent jewelry. Gold plating is only a thin layer of gold over another base metal and can wear away with everyday use.
We also do not use stainless steel for our permanent jewelry.
Choosing quality materials helps your permanent jewelry look beautiful through everyday wear.
How Long Does Permanent Jewelry Last?
There isn't a specific expiration date.
Permanent jewelry can last for years when it is properly cared for, but it is still jewelry — and it is intentionally designed to be able to break under enough pressure.
That is important.
“Permanent” should never mean impossible to remove.
If your jewelry gets caught or needs to come off, you want the chain or connecting ring to be able to break rather than potentially injuring you.
Can Permanent Jewelry Be Removed?
Absolutely.
If you decide you're ready to remove your permanent jewelry, it can simply be cut at the jump ring with the appropriate jewelry cutters.
You may also need to remove it temporarily for certain medical procedures, surgeries or testing.
If you purchased your permanent jewelry from The Greenville Spark, we offer free rewelds when your original piece can be rewelded.
So removing it doesn't necessarily mean saying goodbye to it.
Can I Add a Clasp Instead?
Yes!
Love the look of permanent jewelry but aren't sure you want it welded?
Many pieces can be made with a clasp instead.
This gives you the same customized jewelry experience while allowing you to take the piece on and off whenever you'd like.
Why Do People Get Permanent Jewelry?
This might be our favorite part.
Sometimes permanent jewelry is simply about finding a bracelet you love. But many times, the jewelry represents something much bigger.
We see customers get permanent jewelry to celebrate best friends, mothers and daughters, sisters, birthdays, anniversaries, bridal parties, graduations, new beginnings, relationships, family trips and major life milestones.
And you absolutely do not need another person to get permanent jewelry.
A permanent bracelet can be a gift to yourself, a reminder of a chapter in your life or simply jewelry you never have to remember to put on in the morning.
Is Permanent Jewelry Good for Best Friends?
Permanent jewelry and friendship bracelets are practically made for each other.
Instead of buying identical traditional bracelets, you can choose coordinating chains, matching connectors or completely different pieces that represent your friendship.
It also makes the experience part of the gift.
Years later, the jewelry isn't just a bracelet — it's connected to the memory of the day you got it together.
What Happens at a Permanent Jewelry Appointment?
The process is simple.
First, you'll browse the available chains and choose your favorite. Then you can decide whether you'd like to add a connector, charm, gemstone or other personalization.
We'll custom-fit the jewelry to you and make sure you're comfortable with the fit.
Once everything looks right, we'll weld the tiny connecting ring closed.
The actual spark takes only a moment.
Then comes the hardest decision:
Do you stop at one…or start building a stack?
Do I Need an Appointment for Permanent Jewelry?
At The Greenville Spark, both appointments and walk-ins are welcome.
Appointments receive priority, which can be especially helpful if you're coming with friends, celebrating something special or visiting during a busy weekend.
Walk-ins are always welcome during regular store hours.
